Call Poison Control?

These are the instructions found on most tubes of toothpaste. “In the event of swallowing, contact your local poison control”. What could possibly be in a squirt of toothpaste that would warrant such a call?

  • Diethanolamine is a foaming agent and stabilizer. It is also associated with hormone disruption, cancer and toxicity. By the way, it is banned in the EU.

  • Sodium lauryl sulfate is another foaming agent. It is associated with skin irritation, allergies, and toxicity to aquatic life.

  • PEG’s (polyethylene glycols) are petroleum based compounds that help keep ingredients stable and enhance penetration of other active ingredients. Unfortunately, it is a carcinogenic contaminant,( 1,4-dioxane) and poses a risk to liver and kidney damage.

  • Propylene glycol is used to smooth out the texture of toothpaste. It is also used in antifreeze and paints. It may cause skin irritation and organ toxicity.

  • Tricolan is an antimicrobial agent to fight plaque and gingivitis but it can also bring about liver damage, cancer, and endocrine disruption. It is barred in many other products.

  • Parabens are preservatives added to toothpaste to stop fungus and bacteria from growing. However, it is linked to cancer, endocrine disruption, reproductive toxicity, neurotoxicity and skin irritation.

  • Artificial colors are synthetic dyes derived from petroleum and coal tar. Over time, the accumulation in the body can bring on organ system toxicity.

  • Flouride is found naturally in soil, water and foods. However it is also produced synthetically for use in drinking water, toothpaste, mouthwashes and various chemical products. (Medical News Today) Excessive exposure can lead to a bone disease known as skeletal fluorosis and may adversely affect fertility and the reproductive system in young men.

    Does it really take all of that to ensure healthy teeth?
