What are toxins and what is the toxic load?

According to Merriam-Webster.com, toxins are “a poisonous substance that is a specific product of the metabolic activities of a living organism, and is usually very unstable, notably toxic when introduced into the tissues and typically capable of inducing antibody formation”.  Synonyms include poison and venom.  Toxic Load is the build up of toxins and chemicals in our bodies.  This buildup can come from water, and foods we eat, the environment, skin care and house cleaning products.

When we use “traditional” products that contain chemicals, we are causing this toxic load.  Here’s a simple example for you.  At night, when you wash your face, you use a soap or cleanser (if not a makeup remover) first.  Then you may use a toner, and then some sort of moisturizer or night cream.  If you’re not using “clean” products, you’ve just put 3-4 layers of chemicals/toxins on your face.  That’s just your face.  Think about what you’re doing when you apply makeup, or when you slather on all your favorite scented products in the shower or bath.  Each time you are just increasing your toxic load.

Our skin is the largest organ of our body.  One of its main functions is to protect our bodies from chemicals.  It takes our skin 26 seconds to absorb chemicals.  26 SECONDS!!!!   Do you think it might be worth it to look into the ingredients in products you’re currently using?  I sure do!

Until next time – Be your own health champion!
